Section 8 Housing is a rent subsidy for low income families, the elderly and disabled. The program is provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development or better known as HUD. HUD provides funding to local public housing agencies which administer housing vouchers to people who qualify for the vouchers. A housing voucher provides a portion of the rent to be paid to the landlord.

To receive a housing voucher a person must apply at a local public housing agency. The public housing agency will analyze a person’s income, assets, and family situation to determine if that person meets the guidelines. After qualifying for the housing voucher, the individual is placed on a waiting list. Sometimes an individual will be able to receive immediate assistance, but most people should expect to be placed on the waiting list. After receiving the housing voucher, a person can rent any home that meets the public housing agency’s guidelines.
